Travel Diaries // A Day Trip To Portsmouth

Portsmouth is such an easy day trip from Brighton that I'm surprised we'd never visited before. Matt and I had such a lovely day exploring the city and stopping for regular cocktails in the sunshine. If you're looking for a fun day out somewhere a little different this summer, Portsmouth should be at the top of your list - there's plenty to see and do, whatever your interests...

Historic Dockyard

The Historic Dockyard is still an active Naval base. It's free to wander around and get good look at HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, but if you want to board the ships or enter the museums you'll need to buy tickets.  With only a few hours in the city, and lots to see, we chose to just walk through the dockyard this time but I'm keen to explore the maritime history here some more on our next visit.

Gunwharf Quays

The famous discount shopping area has plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and a cinema, to keep you entertained for hours. We're not big shoppers but we do like a cocktail and a view so we grabbed a seat out on the terrace at Eden as we looked out over the bustling marina and Spinnaker Tower.

Spinnaker Tower

The first viewing deck is 100 metres above the city and offers stunning views across the city and the marina as boats come and go. On the next level there's a tea room where we sipped on a glass of prosecco as we took in the views.

The Point

This is an area of cobbled streets and historic buildings, including Henry V's Round Tower. With a slither of pebbly beach, too, it easily feels as though you're abroad in a beautiful fishing village.
